An 87 year-old Swainton, New Jersey woman used a Medical Alert Alarm to summon help after she fell in her home and sustained a serious head injury Monday morning, according to news reports from the Cape May County Herald.

Medical Alert Alarm’s use a button transmitter that can be worn hanging around the neck.  Once the Button is pushed, it contacts a 24 hour monitoring center which then alerts 9-1-1 that someone needs help.

Middle Township Police Department spokesman Lieutenant John Edwards said the townships 9-1-1 dispatch received the call from Medical Alert’s monitoring center at 9:39 a.m.

Middle Township’s ambulance service was dispatched to the scene on Birch Drive, with police and AtlantiCare paramedics.

Police arrived on scene and were able to quickly gain entry, Edwards said. The woman was found on the floor bleeding from the head. “The paramedics felt her head injury was serious enough to be flown out by helicopter,” Edwards said.

The unidentified woman was transported to the trauma unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City by Medevac 5.

What a great story. I had never really thought much of medical alert buttons, or any kind of medical alarm until I my mother fell down last year and broke her arm. Thank God, she was able to phone her neighbor to help her. Now we make sure to call her regularly to see how she is doing and I have started to seriously looking into a Medical Alert button for her. Thanks for such a positive story.

I have a medical alert button, in fact I have had it for over 5 years now. Thank heavens I have never had to use it but the fact that I have it, and it is always there is a very comforting. Just the thought of hurting myself in the detail that this poor did, is reason alone for me to fully endorse medical alert buttons/devices.

I have had a medical alert button and it has been such a lifesaver as well as way for my family/friends to keep in touch with me and how I am doing. 2 years ago I had serious fall while hanging up a picture I broke my collarbone and bruised up my shoulder and head in the resulting fall. My medical alert button allowed me to not only get the much need help but to reassure others of my age the positives of having such a positive and possibly lifesaving device.

I was so happy to read about the medical alert button and how it possibly saved the life of this 87 year old woman as well as some of those who have posted comments. It is hard for us to think we would ever need to rely on button to help us, but these examples above should clear up that doubt, and hopefully encourage others with health or age needs to do the same.

After reading this story as well those stories posted by others who have commented on this blog how could you not think of getting a medical alert button? Having something that can possibly save your life where ever you are is something I want to have on me at all times. Especially when at my age I can’t get around as easily as I used too. I would recommend all those who have thought of getting a medical alert button to do so.

I much like the the other commentors applaud the medical alert button and how it has saved so many lives. Yes the alert button is sometimes seen as a punchline to jokes, but those who have had it save the their lives or the lives of loved ones would say otherwise. I’m sure this woman’s family is not complaining about the medical alert button.
