A medical alert device worn by an 89-year-old North Knox County woman this morning apparently spooked a home invader who was accosting her, records show.

Medical Alert Base UnitThe incident was reported on December 15, 2009 at 5:03 a.m. in the 4100 block of Crippen Road, which runs off Maynardville Pike, according to records.

The intruder has not been captured.

The victim told police she was in bed when she heard a loud noise “and then the (intruder) was standing over her, shaking her by the arms, and asking if she was OK,” the report states.

When the woman asked the man who he was, he gave her a full name and said, “I’m here to make sure that you are OK,” according to the report.

The woman activated the medical alert device she wore around her neck. When a voice responded over the intercom system to her call, the suspect snatched at the necklace “in an attempt to get the alert button away” from the woman, the report states. That act caused a burn on the victim’s neck and a cut on her right middle finger.

The suspect then darted from the home without taking a thing.

Officers found a smashed door frame and door glass when they arrived at the home, the report shows.

The woman described the intruder as a white man, 25-30 years old, about 5 feet, 9 inches and weighing about 170 pounds.

Paramedics with Rural/Metro ambulance service examined the woman at the scene, but she was not transported to a medical facility.
